If you spend any time watching television you’ve probably seen ads that feature actors with enormous smiles on their faces and seemingly unattainable levels of energy after popping what appears to be a piece of candy in their mouths. They say the gummy vitamin they ingested, often looking like a fruit snack seen in sugary treats intended for children, has given them the essential vitamins needed to rise up and seize the day.

In our previous blog Bariatric Diet; Healthy Alternatives for Managing Weight During the Holidays we discussed how the winter months are detrimental to our weight loss goals. We touched on maintaining our diet to avoid packing on a few extra pounds during the holiday season. Poor dieting is not the only culprit when it comes to weight gain this time of year though, we often forego our exercise routine as well.

We’ve all done it. The first of the year rolls around and we say to ourselves, “I am going to exercise more this year!” We go to the gym that is packed with other ‘resolutioners’, hop on a treadmill, and away we go. Three weeks later we find ourselves not exercising with the same vigor we had and we start to lose motivation. Before we know it we are back into the old routine of not working out. What happened?!

We work so hard all year to manage our weight but during the winter months we tend to throw it all away. It starts with nibbling on candies around Halloween then having a few more drinks and large meals around Thanksgiving. Finally, December 25th comes around and we have been eating sugar cookies and sucking down eggnog like our summer diet never existed.

Many people who have had a bariatric procedure find their lab results to be deficient in iron which can lead to anemia. Anemia is a condition where there is a lack of hemoglobin production and healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body and iron deficiency is often the culprit. Gastric bypass surgery is the most common bariatric procedure where people suffer from anemia but those who have had other procedures such as sleeve gastrectomy or gastric band have reported iron deficiency as well.
